Burial or Cremation
Understanding your options for burial and cremation services in Dublin.
Burial and Cremation
The most commonly chosen option in Ireland is still the burial of a loved one.
Many options for burial are available across Dublin, depending on your location. Your Jennings Funeral Director will research the availability at various cemeteries for you.
Burial Plot Details
Burial grounds (cemeteries) in Ireland are managed by local authorities, who appoint a registrar or caretaker to oversee the sale of plots and maintain the burial ground in some cases. Some burial grounds are operated by parishes, while others are maintained by local groups. If you wish to purchase a burial plot, you can contact your local authority for their details.
However, your Jennings Funeral Director will facilitate the purchase of burial plots as part of their funeral service package.
It is important to note that many burial grounds or graveyards in Ireland are already full, and there may be restrictions on pre-purchasing or buying burial plots in advance.
Family Graves
It is permissible to reopen a grave for the burial of a family member, but a space of at least one foot above the previous burial must be maintained. Generally, it is possible to bury three to four persons in each grave space.
Your Jennings Funeral Director will provide guidance and assistance prior to the purchase of a grave.
Cremation
Cremation is becoming increasingly popular, and there is a significant cost difference if you do not already own a grave. The cost difference between a cremation and opening an existing grave (depending on the cemetery) is marginal.
There are four crematoria in Dublin: Glasnevin, Dardistown, Newlands Cross, and Mount Jerome. The typical duration of a cremation service is approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Although double slots can be booked, availability for these slots is limited. Your Jennings Funeral Director will be happy to advise you on this matter.
